Since what the Saint Louis Symphony hands out free for orchestral members
who want them is simple cheap disposable foam ear plugs which are easily
available on pharmacy shelves, this is what I use. They can be used several
times before disposing. I am creative with how I use them; i.e., they
don't have to be both jammed all the way in each ear in most musical
situations. Sometimes you can put one only in the ear that's toward the trumpet
section you are sitting in front of to play. Or you can insert them just very
loosely about 1/3 of the way into the ear canal such that you are
deflecting sound waves but you can still hear music and speech around you. I now
carry them all the time, not to use when I'm playing, but to use when I end
up at a concert where the sound is too amplified for me. (The dang-fangled
contemporary church concerts my younger sister tries to drag me to for
example.)
