It would be difficult to find a better rhythm section than the 'Chicago' one on Bud Freeman's Famous Chicagoans 1940 date.
Dave Bowman p, Condon g, Mort Stuhlmaker b, Dave Tough d.
Having a front line of Maxie, Pee Wee, Bud and Jack T helped a bit, too.
The tracks have, in my view, some of the finest improvised ensembles on record.
I enjoy the banjo of it's day - early Ellington, Washboard Rhythm Kings etc.
But it's been outdated for 70 years now, and its remorseless clank should be suffocated.
Rhythm guitar is fine, but sometimes even that inhibits soloists.
The definition of perfect pitch?
Some one who can throw a banjo into a lavatory from 20 feet without it touching the sides.
Then there was the man who was drinking in a bar and suddenly remembered that he'd left his banjo in full
view on the back seat of his parked car.
He left his friends and rushed back to the car, and sure enough someone had broken into it.
On the back seat were two banjoes.
