Hi Listmates,
I have just been out in the Phoenix area for a few days staying with a
cousin. On one of the days we went to the Musical Instrument Museum and
it just about blew my mind. I had never realised the huge variety of
drums, lutes, horns and stringed instruments that exist in the world.
The museum is divided into sections by geographic area - Africa, Asia,
Oceania, South America, North America and Europe. Within each section
there is a display for each region with an LED flat-screen display and
recorded samples of the music of that region.

Instruments on display range from guitar like instruments made from gas
(petrol) cans to the most exquisite instruments with inlay decorations.
Some instruments have so many strings that one would think it would
require two or three people to play the thing.
There was only a small area devoted to jazz - Whiteman, Ellington, Monk,
Dizzy, Bird, Coltrane, but I would recommend a visit to any musician no
matter what you play. It does tend to put our music in context somehow.
Cheers,
Tony Pringle, NBEJB
