Ah Rufus Harley, Dave. I played a few gigs with him in Philadelphia
before he passed away. He could swing jazz on pipes (as well as reeds)
from Dixieland to avant-garde. There is a picture of him and me along
with 100 or so Philadelphia Jazz Musicians taken in 2003, entitled "A
Philly Jazz Reunion". He is dressed in crossover african/american
indian garb.

When I was with the Southampton Dixie, Racing and Clambake Society
Jazz Band in the late 50s, early 60s, we cut a demo record with a 3
Pipers. That was a New Orleans Revival Style band. One of the tunes
included a guest pianist, Walter Bishop Jr. OKOMers may not know of
him because he was bopper who played with Bird, Blakey, Rollins,
Miles et al. BUT he knew the roots of jazz and had a blast with the
SDRCS and Pipers.

Unfortunately the record was never released and my copy was broken in
a move from Philadelphia to the San Francisco Bay area. But we swung a
couple of trad N.O. Tunes. Fans of the Hot Frogs may remember that Joe
Ashworth had also been a clarinetist with the SDRCS before he moved to
California. He also played with The Christmas City Six at Lehigh
University in Bethlehem PA.
