Hello,
Disturbing the hornet nest again!
Following the discussion that erupted after I stated that I was not
very keen on Ken Colyer's Decca recordings, I must say that I just
love the old Barber records (old - before the band became "Jazz and
Blues Band" with the addition of a "blues guitar").
I've just heard "Best Yet" (Metronome HLP 10.065), and my admiration
of the old Barber band has been reinforced. OK, sopme of the vocals
may not bee so great, but the playing, the energy, and - yes - the
SWING!
I would like to know the lineup - the label give no information
whatsoever. The numbers are: We Shall Walk Through the Streets of the
City, Basin St. Blues, Chiquita, Lazy River, 'Tain't What you Do, King
Kong, Blueberry Hill (expendable), Gonna Build a Mountain, If YouCan't
BE Good, Be Careful (a male singer that sounda like neither Lonnie
Donegan nor Barber to my ears), Stevedore Stomp, I Can't Give You
Anything but Love, and Moose March.
Cheers
