Dear Steve,
That statement (which is a great one) rang memory bells.
In pre-CD daze, while listening to an LP featuring Fred "Sugar" Hall And His Sugar Babies (21 September 1928) from Okeh 41123 I wondered about the reason for the silent break in "It Goes Like This (A Funny Melody)".
My research at the time finally revealed the joke by its composers (Cliff Friend -mel. and Irving Caesar - lyr).
I'd like to share it with you, Harry-with-a-C and the list.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
PS: The silent break is part of the song as it is also on the 1928 Cliff Edwards' version (15 August 1928).
