Even earlier than that, Jack. The Civil War re-enacters among this group will tell you that the brass bands played dances and parties during that era too.  Hollywood knew this as well. It's been awhile since I have seen them, but I believe that "Gone With The Wind" and "Fort Apache" would be two examples.
