I suppose it's not politically correct but I love the '20's verse lyrics
also. To me it is essentially its own independent 32 bar tune. I have "I
Scream/Ice Cream" in the book for STL BandJos Youth Band and we do it this
way: original verse, the '50's rock lyrics in Bb then into C for the
original chorus lyrics. This is a tune that kids like, have often heard in part,
allows me to incorporate some music history in teaching it; i.e., Reser's
Cliquot Club Eskimos, advertising in the days of radio, etc. There are
also various "ham it up" things one can do with this tune and one of the
hardest things of all is to help an average kid loosen up and have fun when
performing.

Earlier this year, while on tour with his band, I asked Chris Barber about
these vocal lines and why they differ from the original version of the
1920's.
He then told me, that in the 1950's they changed the lyrics, since several
of the Ice flavours mentioned in the original didn't exist in the United
Kingdom.
I teased him a bit , and asked if he was sponsored at that time by Coca
Cola, but that was not the case. (Coke should have done that, of course!)
