No one has yet asked a fundamental question.  Are you coming to the banjo 
from the guitar?  If you are, you might want to start out with guitar 
tunings and fingerings on a six-string banjo, often referred to as a 
banjitar.  For an inexpensive try-out instrument, try a Gold Tone.  For a 
better-quality instrument, try a Deering.  If you worry about being 
authentic, then remember--if it was good enough for Johnny St. Cyr, it 
should be authentic enough for you.
