 There must be fifty million banjos in the USA already, every banjo player  has at least five don't they ?

You should be able to sit in and play one or five of 'em anywhere they show up :))   Ya'll  got a International Banjo society Club don't Ya ? 
secret handshake and all that stuff :))  

 
There are so many Banjos in California that people still break into cars with one on the seat and leave another with it.

This suggestion of mine will by no means relieve all the concerns.   But it 
may help someone.  Applies mostly to those traveling only to  one U.S. 
destination or at least a very limited number of destinations.   Remember there 
are often musician acquaintances in those areas who have extra  instruments. 
 So, just one idea to explore is whether you can travel  instrument free 
and use a borrowed instrument while in U.S.
