"Has George Washingmachine go a real name? His wonderful playing turns
up on various Oz recordings. I looked him up on the web, and that was
the only name given. Still, it does not sound real.

Of course, there are other quite accomplished jazz violinist. There's
the Aussie Daniel Weltlinger, the Dutch Tim Kliphuis, the (late)
British johnny van Derrick - the list is endless!"

George Washingmachine started life as Steven Washington - his father was a
brilliant Melbourne guitarist - Joe Washington.

The first Australian "hot" violinist was Don Harper, who also spent some
time in England and recorded there. At present Sydney's Ian Cooper is also
playing and doing very well, touring with the likes of James Morrison.

In the thirties a number of saxophonists playing in the big bands doubled
violin (it was probably the instrument on which they started) but they never
made waves as "hot" players on the fiddle.

Best wishes
Jack Mitchell
