Anton,what an interesting comment about 2 cornets not being on the 1926 gig. I think by 1926 Louis Armstrong was using more of the 1-cornet format than what he'd used with King Oliver where they'd both played.
Regarding the trumpet question, wish I could see that one for you. Wonton Marsalis plays a Monette but I'm not 100% sure about fixed vs. removable mouthpiece. (At least, I'm ASSUMING (and you know what that does) that he's playing a Monette cornet or trumpet.
At the risk of having my head chewed off by my fellow trumpeters, i think that both clarinet and sopramo sax should be brought back more. This is both for stylistic purity and for the fact that tenor and alto sax have been given such a prominent place in modern jazz that, although I like them, (again at risk of decapitation) there needs to be other timbre input.
