[Dixielandjazz] John Gill

Dear Mr. Baker, and DJML,

I just saw Mr. Baker's post about John Gill. Mr. Baker is of course reporting Mr. Erdos's side of things. I"m sure John Gill would have his own perspective about that session.

I have known John for years; I met him when was working with Turk Murphy's band. Years later, in 1996, we both played in Woody Allen's New Orleans Jazz Band (led by banjoist Eddy Davis) on Mr. Allen's European tour. Someone told me later that we'd played twenty-nine cities in thirty-three days! Well, during all that time, John Gill was unfailingly cooperative, and what I would consider to be a perfect, professional sideman.

i wish I could say the same about myself!

John has never seemed "eccentric" to me--not that that's a bad thing--any more than any of us out here trying to make a living playing in various anachronistic jazz styles might be called "eccentric."

Anyway, I'd give John a break. He's earned it.

Respectfully,
