Indy Ties to Jazz Legend Kenton Show Up on DVD
by Steve Slosarek
Indianapolis Star blog, April 12, 2011
Stan Kenton died in 1979, but you can still see him in concert thanks to a new DVD
available at retailers starting today.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of Kenton's birth, "Stan Kenton: Artistry in Rhythm:
Portrait of a Jazz Legend" (Jazzed Media) has been released, complete with local
ties.
The documentary on the big band jazz legend includes interviews with more than 20
insiders associated with his career, which spanned from the early 1940s to late 1970s.
In June 1972, the Stan Kenton Orchestra performed (and then released to album) "Live
at Butler University." Kenton was at the forefront of introducing jazz education
to colleges and high schools throughout the world.
The DVD contains rare film and TV performances. None other than local jazz expert
Chuck Workman has spotted Indianapolis musicians who were 1970s members in the band
and appear on the DVD: John Von Ohlen on drums, Chuck Carter on baritone sax, Ramon
Lopez on percussion and Dick Shearer on trombone.

"Are you crazy," says Mick, "Have you seen how many of their owners go blind?"
