Dear Jim,
Austrlia's pioneer, and premier, jazz band, Graeme Bell's Dixieland Jazz Band/Australian Jazz Band did the same thing  from 1947 until it disbanded in 1952. 
This was the band that toured post-war Europe and the UK. Twice.
The string bass/tuba player was Lou 'The Baron' Silbereisen.
A gentle giant of a man. And a very dear mate.
