Dan and others:
I rarely contribute to this list, but have been a lurker for several years and like it a lot.. Dan, I've been an admirer of yours ever since I first heard you on records with Rebecca Kilgore. And your commentary is as fluid as your trombone playing.

>
> This week's contribution is Big Chief Battle Axe. Where'd you dig that one up? Sheesh! Thats as mouldy a fygge as I've heard in some time.
>
> I used to hear the legendary cornetist, Papa Ray Ronnei play it at the Pizza Palace in nearby Huntington Beach, CA back in the early '70s (yes, NINETEEN-seventies, you smart-aleck kids, you). Ray played on occasion with an early edition of Vince Saunders's South Frisco Jazz Band. Ray plays something like Freddie Keppard, and perhaps a little more like Mutt Carey ("Papa Mutt"), who of course played and recorded with Kid Ory's band in the '20s and '40s. Of course, Ray has his own individual "thing" in his playing, too! Sings great, as well; especially the blues.
>
> Ray Ronnei actually roomed with (and studied with) Mutt Carey for a time, so there is definitely a "real deal" aspect to Ray's playing.
>
> I just remembered that Ray recorded Big Chief Battle Axe on the SFJB's first LP, called Here Comes the Hot Tamale Man (another good tune for a future "Name That Song!")
>
> You guys sound terrific, and have obviously been listening and "sussing out" the great players. I hope to hear you in person again before too long. In the meantime, I look forward to your next Name That Song episode.
