No, not of drugs or alcohol - the ODJB!
While listening to some California Ramblers recordings I was
astonished by the proximity of its "Tiger Rag" to that pf the ODJB,
despite the larger personnell. Lovely!
And while on the subject of the California Ramblers - there are two
takes of "Collegiate" on the CD. While neither is very jazzy, the
first take sounds very bland, while the second has some jazz passages
that make it come to life! Yet, both were recorded at the same
sessions, and are actually very similar. One of the disadvantages of
old recordings - some takes sounded bad, others - good. It is even
more apprent in the case of recordings of the same tune by the same
band, at very short intervals. for different labels - they often sound
as if they were different tunes!
Cheers
