Company Ends Its Sponsorship of New York and Newport Jazz Festivals
NY TIMES - By BEN SISARIO - Nov 4
Once again, George Wein’s jazz festivals in New York and Newport,
R.I., are without title sponsors.
CareFusion, the medical technology company that supported the New York
series this summer and the Newport festival for the last two, will not
be renewing its deal, the company said in an announcement circulated
by Mr. Wein, 85, who helped found the Newport Jazz Festival in 1954.
CareFusion, an independent spinoff of the pharmaceutical wholesaler
Cardinal Health, surprised the jazz world last year with its deal with
Mr. Wein, who was rebuilding his festival franchises after the
financial crisis of the company that had bought him out in 2007,
Festival Network. Explaining its entry into jazz, CareFusion said that
music was a major avocation of doctors and other health professionals.
(In an interview with The New York Times this year, Mr. Wein said that
CareFusion’s support of the New York festival amounted to about half a
million dollars; before CareFusion, the audio company JVC sponsored
the two festivals for 23 years.)
“CareFusion came forward at a very crucial time when my company was
facing decisions about the future of this historic event,” Mr. Wein
said in a statement. “They understood the worldwide appeal of jazz and
tapped into its magic to launch their brand, and we’re pleased that
jazz helped to make the company a household name.”
Mr. Wein’s statement added that the Newport Jazz Festival was
scheduled for Aug. 5 to 7, and that it and the New York series are
“available for title sponsorship” — as is Mr. Wein’s other major
summer event, the Newport Folk Festival, which CareFusion did not
support.
