"DownBeat: The Great Jazz Interviews," edited by Frank Alkyer and Ed Enright (Hal
Leonard, $24.99)
by Ellis Widner
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, March 9, 2010
Those who love jazz and American music will want to feast on this anthology of interviews
that covers 75 years of DownBeat magazine with luminaries such as Louis Armstrong,
Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and many others. Organized
along decade-designated chapters (from the 1930s to the 2000s), the book is an appealing
mix of interviews, photos and magazine covers.
But there's more than the familiar classic names in this tome. Also present are contemporary
artists and genre-benders such as banjoist Bela Fleck, singer Cassandra Wilson, singer-songwriter
Joni Mitchell (who recorded an album of Charles Mingus material), soul great James
Brown, rock's Elvis Costello and the great New Orleans composer/pianist Allen Toussaint,
the great violinist Stephane Grappelli, guitarist Bill Frisell and bluesmen B.B.
King and Buddy Guy.
