[Dixielandjazz] A WEE BIT OF ERIN

I don't know how it is in other major cities, but I know that for many years
here in Houston, we have not had a St. Patrick's Day parade on March 17th
unless it happened to fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

This year we had the "traditional" downtown parade on Saturday, 3/12 and
then an uptown parade on Sunday, 3/14. The idea of holding parades on the
weekend was something that has only been done since about 1983. Parade
committee members happen to be comprised of bar & restaurant owners who
apparently put their heads together and decided that if they could pack
their joints on a weekday selling green beer, Irish stew, and corned beef
and cabbage, look how much more business they could draw on a Saturday or
Sunday.

Back in '80 & '81 I led a kazoo marching group that preceded the float of
Griff's Shillelagh Inn, a celebrated sports bar here in town but that's all
history now.

So, being a traditionalist at heart, I will soon be putting on a huge pot of
corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots and hauling out my Bing Crosby,
Dennis Day and Ruby Murray records and celebrating the ridding of the snakes
from Ireland in my own humble abode..

I will also be wearing a kelly green golf shirt as I take my daily walk to
the mailbox.

HAPPY ST.PATRICK'S DAY TO ALL !!!
