Steve B,

I choose the trumpet (instrument of torture) as my choice of weapons so to speak. Next time around, having seen it's magnetic allure at work, I'll chose the Tenor Saxophone. Right enough of that.

Trumpet Players ~ Fats Navarro & Booker Little (NTMLKOM) must be included.

I love the Creole Band to bits, but wouldn't include Oliver on my list of trumpet greats. Oliver though blows away my reasoning with the first great solo in Jazz, so much for my opinions.

For you old codgers, listen to the Verve recordings Red Allen made alongside Ory in the late 50s. On that form not many modernists couldn't live with him.
If memory serves me well every solo is exceptional.

Don't forget Jabbo Smith. Kid Howard Climax Sessions.

How to reinvent the melody over and over again, solo superbly, then top it with an outstanding last chorus? Try Buck Clayton live at Lou Terrasi's on My Gal Sal.

Best swing Trumpeter, Roy Eldridge by a mile (I can hear gnashing of teeth).
Don't believe me, try out Krupa's Swing Band 1936, who can outswing Eldridge.
Goodman plays a blinder too.

Richard
