Probably a lot to do with the timing of the technology. Someone like Columbia would have switched over to larger formats once they became available. But in the late 40's there were studio's still cutting direct to acetates. Sam Phillips at Sun Records cut on both acetates and then 1/4 inch through much of the 50's.

Sounds reasonable to me, as I've done such things at a local radio station back
n the 80s. I just never would have expected a major studio to use something so
mall.
