Forthcoming Stuff Smith CD featuring Ella Fitzgerald
A new CD: "Stuff Smith and His Lucidin Orchestra featuring Ella Fitzgerald" (AB Fable
ABCD1-024) produced by Anthony Barnett - longtime Stuff Smith devotee and specialist
- will be available in some months.
I don't have yet details but we know that in January and possibly February 1937 Ella
appeared three times a week on WMCA's Lucidin Eye Lotion "Let's Listen To Lucidin"
from the Biltmore Hotel with the Stuff Smith's fourteen-piece orchestra arranged
and co-directed by Edgar Sampson formed of members of Chick Webb, Cab Calloway, Stuff
Smith orchestras (Jonah Jones, Ben Webster, Cozy Cole...)
It was Ella's first sponsored radio programs and she replaced Helen Ward who was
ill. It is said that the acetates still exist for programs dated January 06/08/15/22
1937....
The CD will be available from US distributor Cadence-NorthCountry
http://www.cadencebuilding.com
UK distributor Discovery Records, and directly from the producer
http://www.abar.net
I'll pass release date and details as soon as I get them.
