This email was sent to me as part of a group email to school district music,
art and drama teachers by the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) curriculum
coordinator Craig Faniani, in the San Juan Unified School district, in
Sacramento. As some of you might know, the Sacramento Traditional Jazz
Society has a partnership and Traditional Jazz Pilot Project with this
school district. The below youtube video was so inspirational that Bob
Ringwald suggested that I share the link with fellow DJML list mates.
Sorry that I haven't been able to respond in a timely manner to recent
posts, as we are preparing for the upcoming Trad Jazz Youth Band to be held
on February 13th!

 Hi All-
Here are a couple of VAPA inspirational items. The first one comes from a
Winton Marsalis quote in an interview in Downbeat Magazine contributed by
Josh Murray - Rio Band. The second is a youtube post from Allison
Stiles-Roberts, Mira Loma Arts.

When asked about solutions to issues in teaching performance - How to make
students want to learn....Winton states, "hmmm... My father used to say,
'You can bring a horse to water but you can't make him thirsty.’ The best
way I've found to combat the haze of uninspired participation that engulfs
some of our young is for the director to be *aggressively inspired*. Yeah,
that's what we need to do out here: *Stay inspried* no matter what..."

Here’s the youtube link – please watch. It’s only 10 minutes but it will
change you!

Thanks to Josh and Allison for striking the responsive chords
And thank you all for valuing inspiration,
Craig
