Have we other evidence of Louis on stage in conversation? It was probably
an extension of his stage persona/jazz cat image.

Was Louis on something?. His answers were either garbled or nonsensical and
he seemed completely at sea. He gave the impresion of being either very
badly briefed or stone deaf and not following what anyone else was saying.
Of course the audience, unless the laughter was canned, thought everything
he said was hilarious but it is a well known maxim that a well known funny
man has only to say "Pass the salt" and everybody laughs.
I thought it was embarrassing
