While it is no secret that I am a transplanted NY Yankee, Arnett Cobb was a
native Houstonian, for many years sideman with Lionel Hampton .

He suffered serious injury in an auto collision and for many years had to
play sax while being supported by two crutches.

I read recently where in 1972 or 1973 he needed a ride to the
Shamrock-Hilton Hotel to see Duke Ellington perform. He called upon
trumpeter Barrie Lee Hall to drive him there.

Introductions were made and Duke shortly thereafter hired Hall to play with
his orchestra. He stayed on with Mercer and now is the leader of the Duke
Ellington Orchestra.

I mention this as a rather interesting quirk of fate. Duke passed on in May
1974 and had Hall not received that phone call from Cobb, who knows if he
and Ellington would have ever met.
