[Dixielandjazz] French Quarter Festival New Orleans

Some of the international bands go over for the entire month of April. They pay their own way and play for tips at Fritzel's on Bourbon St. & MRB (Mississippi River Bottom) on St. Philip. It is their vacation time. At least that's how it is with the Swedes, who I got to know a little bit while hanging out at Fritzel's. They have been coming over for the last 10 or so years but I think it's only been the last few years where they have actually played on a festival stage. Keith Baltz, tuba with Devil Mountain Jazz Band from Calif., has been playing with the Swedes over the FQF weekend for the last 3 years.

I have heard from several US trad bands (that are neither "local" nor "Super-Star") that is is very hard to break in to the French Quarter and Jazz & Heritage festivals from the "outside." I don't know how so many international bands made it to FQF (or if many US non-locals ever did FQF) but bands from California sure don't get invited much to Jazzfest. Clint Baker's Jazz Band is one of the rare exceptions, and that was maybe 20 years ago.

I am not too worried by this - there are other festivals around the country for OKOM, and the more good work Louisiana and New Orleans musicians can get, the better.

I asked the question because it seems I fairly often hear grumbles about how there's no trad, or Dixieland or work for same in New Orleans. So I was just wonderin'. Like, your answer implies, Chas mentioned that the "trad" bands that were there were essentially local. I'm not taking issue with that, just restating it. It's always a good, if somewhat rare thing, to recognize hometown talent.
