Well, far be it for me to slavishly promote local goodies, BUT:

"Jim Cullum Jazz Band
Hot Jazz for a Cool Yule
Jim Cullum Jazz Band Home Page

The Riverwalk Live from the Landing PBS radio series regularly
features trumpeter Jim Cullum's Jazz Band on well-scripted shows. This
particular CD finds Cullum and his hot group (with either Brian
Oglivie or Allan Vache on clarinet, trombonist Mike Pittsley, pianist
John Sheridan, Howard Elkins doubling on banjo and guitar, bassist Don
Mopsick and drummer Ed Torres) on excerpts from a few Christmas jazz
programs. Among the notable guests are pianist Dick Hyman (heard on
"Jingle Bells Swing"), flugelhornist Clark Terry (duetting with
Sheridan on "The Christmas Song"), soprano saxophonist Bob Wilber (who
jams on a heated "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" with the full band),
bassist Milt Hinton (on "Winter Wonderland"), singer Banu Gibson (on
two songs, including a rendition of "White Christmas" notable for
including the rarely heard verse) and tap dancer Savion Glover. Fine
classic renditions of Christmas jazz. Scott Yanow"

NOT TO MENTION (this technique is called 'apophasis', meaning to
mention something by saying it won't be mentioned) Don Mopsick's
wonderful sendup Christmas takeoff called "My Christmas List", with
Banu Gibson doing a marvelously nasal Newwww Yawk accent, and all the
while the tune actually swings!

Don, we'll really miss you with Cullum! Have a great retirement
in Florida (that is, if you really get to retire).

     Dan

GHB has its entire CD catalogue available. LPs are another matter -
the lion's share fell victim to katrina.
Cheers
