Hi Folks,

Here is a message from Paul Barnes - presenter of 'The Late Paul Barnes'
on BBC Radio Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Northampton, Kent
& Three Counties - and Live on the Internet - and for seven days
following transmission as a BBC 'Listen Again' item on BBC Iplayer.

Paul says,
"Benny Goodman's centenary falls on May 30, which happens to be a
Saturday. I'll be doing a special programme that night.

BG was one of the most prolific and long-lasting performers of the swing
era, active from 1928 till 1985.
His band backed Billie Holiday's first recording. His was the first
swing band to appear at Carnegie Hall. It's his quartet that's heard
during the romantic balcony scene with Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff
Bridges in "The Fabulous Baker Boys".
Besides being a great jazzman Goodman was a fine classical player. In
1947 Aaron Copland wrote a clarinet concerto for him but Goodman was so
unnerved by its musical demands that he declined to play it in public
until 1950.
Many great names figured in Goodman's band over the years - Bunny
Berigan, Harry James, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, Stan Getz - and Peggy
Lee was the band's vocalist for a time.
One British alto sax player puzzled him. "How do you play so well when
you're so drunk?" says Benny. "I practise drunk," came the reply".
Tune in Saturday at 23:00 hours UK time or 22:00 UTC if you live abroad.
