Nope. It was just a fund raiser we had going, $36 for the 36th year of the
Jubilee. Raised around $40K with it.

See, that is how nasty rumors start.

Best,

Bob , Some where recently there was an item that mentioned $ 36.00 as a
condition of being a volunteer. Perhaps it was a suggestion, Will talk to
Foley at the SanDiego Festival.

Thanks for the reply

I don't know of any volunteers who have to pay to be a volunteer.

As a Lurker who spent an enjoyable day on the paddle wheeler many long gone
days and gave several years as a construction volunteer during several
transitions from different warehouses to my last participation in 2003. I
was somewhat appaled at the introductin of different styles of music that
began to permeate the Jubilee quite a few years back.. At least there
hasn't
been the introduction of Hard Rock, but one of the blues bands was close.

The decision to not put the date on the smoke stack of the paddle wheeler on
the volunteer's shirt was the beginnning of a generic time ?? Secondly the
charging the volunteers to be volunteers is revolting. I used to travel
close to 200 miles each weekend to aid in the construction group's
preparation of the set-ups and annual repair. Were I to be living again in
the Donner Summit area, I would not be a volunteer.

I applaud the effort to regain some more audience, but let us old gray hairs
and blue hairs still have enough choices to see and hear our old favorites
and possibly find new ones

Hi, Bob -
You could use this response for the DJML. I'll probably be tarred
and feathered, but oh well.

What the writer refers to is a conundrum. Our world-wide attendance
has been falling for the past decade, with a larger and larger
percentage of our audiences from within a 25-mile radius of the
festival. In the early years, there was great enthusiasm for
traditional jazz, but as the years have passed, the representation of
traditional jazz purists has fallen. Our local audiences want newer
and more varied styles of entertainment. Over the years, starting
even when Bill Borcher was our executive, we have provided varied
styles of music, but our local "brand" has not caught up with what we
offered. So, after extensive discussions, we have taken the first
step - referring to the festival both as the Sacramento Jazz Festival
and as the Sacramento Jubilee, interchangeably. I might say that we
continue to provide plenty of swing and traditional jazz, including
BED, Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band, Company B, Fulton Street Jazz
Band, Gramercy 6, Sister Swing, Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums, the
101st Army Dixieland Band, Black Tuesday Jazz Band, Blue Street Jazz
Band, Big Tiny Little Jazz Band, Catsnjammer Jazz Band, Climax Jazz
Band, Cornet Chop Suey, Dr. Bach and the Jazz Practitioners,
Firecracker Jazz Band, Fulton Street Jazz Band, Golden Gate Rhythm
Machine, High Sierra Jazz Band, K Street Ramblers, Midnight Rose Jazz
Band, Natural Gas, New Lowdown, Night Blooming Jazzmen, and Polly’s
Hot Paupers, and Royal Society Dance Orchestra, two dozen all star
performers who play traditional and swing jazz and, this year, the
Benny Goodman Centennial Tribute Band.
