I completely agree...Al Hirt was an anomaly amongst trumpet players.   I 
have been defending him continuously since joining this mailing  list.  The 
fact of the matter is...unless you play this instrument, you  really have no 
idea what that man was capable of.  In the realm of "insane  trumpet players 
of all time", this is where he fits:
 
1) Allen Vizutti
2) Al Hirt
3) Doc Severinsen
4) Maynard Ferguson
5) Harry James
 
There are, and always will be, great players in all areas of music -  jazz, 
trad jazz, rock, classical, pop, blues, bebop, etc.  The trumpeters  on my 
list above, could - and did - play anything.  Al Hirt was one of  the best 
trumpet players the world has ever seen.
