Not quite true. RealAudio files can be played using the free
real alternative player :-

Yes, you can get a free version, but it can be a pain. Some people
consider it to be spyware or adware. It has a tendency to
leave things running in the background and keeps asking you to
upgrade. Every now and then I install it, then get fed up with it
eating up resources and throw it away.
So far the alternative has met all my needs.
