Ric Giorgi asked if a Firehouse Fake Book annotation on the lead sheet
of Struttin was correct. It said the lead sheet was modeled after a
Louis Recording with the Hot 5 in 1923. The lead sheet had the back
beats written in, in the verse. He wondered if there was an earlier
Louis version.

No Ric, the annotation is not correct.

Struttin was copyrighted in 1927 and Lil Hardin Armstrong owned the
ASCAP composer credits.

She and Louis were married in 1924. Louis Hot 5 recorded it in
December 1927.

Chances are very slim that Louis recorded it prior to that date, but
Bill Haesler would be the final word on that.

Chancers are they did not use a chart of the 1927 version because:

Verse: Has stops on the first beat during the middle 4 bars..
Chorus: Has stops on the back ( 2 & 4 ) beats on both Ory's and and
Armstrong's solos. Dodds solo is 4/4 rhythm.

BTW: This song was not originally about food. <grin> See Cab
Calloway's hip dictionary.
