Cindy Leiby wrote off list about Zach's passing:

"Zach was one of the first musicians I ever worked with, and on top of
being a wonderful saxophonist, he had so many great stories about
"Hamp's Band" and all the others he played for. I'm sure that none of
us will ever forget that he was the center of so many terrific musical
memories."

Bob Perkins of Jazz 90, WRTI-FM had these details to pass on.

Leon "Zach" Zachery died last Wednesday at the age of 84 and funeral
services will be held this Saturday March 7,2009 at St. Joseph's Pro
Cathedral Church, 2907 Federal Street, Camden NJ. Viewing is from
12:00pm - 1:00pm. Services start at 1:00pm.

Zach Zachery was a composer, arranger, teacher, and a wonderful alto
saxophonist. He played the the Earle Theater, the Uptown and Mastbaum
Theaters in Philadelphia, the Royal Theater in Baltimore, the Howard
Theater in Washington, DC, and the Majestic in Chicago. He played with
such greats as Ella Fitzgerald and Sammy Davis Jr. to Patti LaBelle
and Teddy Pendergrass. He played lead alto with Lionel Hampton and the
Mercer Ellington Orchestra and also led his own group called "Zach
Zachery's Atomic Five." Comfortable in all settings from the Apollo
Theater in Harlem and the Latin Casino to Jimmy Carter's White House
and Carnegie Hall with the MSFB Orchestra, Zach Zachery was always the
epitome of technique, dexterity, and just plain nerve. He will be
missed and talked about for a very long time.
