Well said.
I became involved in the Melbourne (Australia) jazz scene when I was  
sixteen.
(I started work at fifteen just after WWII.)
It was exactly as you describe.
I had left school, so this world was a intimate part of my 'adult'  
education.
And still is, 62-years later.
