The film was based on the Book titled "Whisky Galore" but I saw it here
in the States as Tight Little Island, and was one of my my favorites of
the many fine Brit films in the fn based manner. The Doctor/Nurse series
also very funny. The Alec Guiness films were likewise gems.
But the French did comeup with a few, subtitles and all, that were very
funny.Mr Hulot's Holiday was outstanding.
They came along at a time when American movies were either "epics" or
B-schlock, with nothing much in between, so the small "art" theaters
were the place to go when you just wanted to jave some good laughs and
enjoy good British comedy - long before Monty Pythom hit our shores.
