Greetings,2009 banjo JAM [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102619719939&s=1751&e=001mJ-oCLnLo6HlQhmxT_8kWhKv1azOKwXsN97E31XY3FsRBJ2JX7oKaKLnLWdv6dDYVEZ1aoHzyepMFrOFltb-fbvbSQnAHzvRxW1I-OaN6MEZYH3gjETcWlwbsHFFIP4ony4peIrEzFo=]
A special message from the Summer Jazz Banjo Festival core committee co-chairs.
Yes we can, yes we did. Congratulation to all for putting on a wildly successful
show of shows.
We began this process with whispered conversations during last years Banjo
Jubilee. Comments ranged from; great idea-we can never pull it off, do you know
how much work this will take? Are you crazy? And one voice that said yeah-lets
do it. Thus was born a labor of love-the chance to fulfill a dream and spread the
gospel of four string banjos. We took it to the East Bay Banjo Club Board of Directors-who
embraced the enthusiasm and vision we brought to the idea.  A committee was formed;
Jim Blankenship, Tim Perry, Bill Cooper, Bob Nelson, and Bud Pierce. From that
initial meeting we knew we needed more help. John & June Rosploch were added
and later Mickie McDonald joined us. Our goals; spread the joy of the four-string
banjo, bring in the kids, and have FUN! We hit the bull's eye on all counts. We
have raised the bar when comes to banjo festivals. The refrain we heard over an
over again was, WOW! you got it right-we need to do that!
None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of so
many; the traffic control crew-guiding folks to the show. The hospitality crew-making
sure everyone got in, the raffle, and cd sales force, the green room generals,
security and stage crews. To all the members, family, and friends a heartfelt thank
you.
Can't wait for the 2nd annual!

Report on the First Annual Summer Jazz Banjo Festival
by Larry Caputo
(The East Bay Banjo Club on the Soda Center Stage)

The First Annual Summer Jazz Festival

June 14, 2009

It was organized by Jack Convery, Bill Sullivan, and the East Bay Banjo Club of
Pleasant Hill, CA. and took place on
the beautiful campus of St. Mary's College in Moraga, California. The town of
Moraga with it's population of approximately 17,000 people is located 10 miles
east of Oakland and Berkeley, California and nestled in the hills adjacent to
Lafayette and Orinda as well as the unincorporated community of Canyon. The
Campus of Saint Mary's College was a perfect setting for the Summer Jazz
Festival with rooms and a patio for banjoists and vendors plus an auditorium for
the big show and a smaller performance room known as Claey's Lodge for
additional banjo activities.

The performances started at noontime on the 14thwith Bill Cooper
of the East Bay Banjo Club welcoming the performers and the public. Yes, this
was a show not only for the musicians but for the public as well.

The Sacramento Banjo Band lead the show off followed by Harry Higgins and the
Red Garter Band. On stage next was the newly formed Wineland Band from
Livermore, California followed by the banjoist who put this whole thing
together, Jack Convery. Jack's show included a surprise greeting by

Lt Gov. of California, John Garamendi, and a talented, 12 year old singer, Natalie
Taut, from Turlock,CA., who received a standing ovation for her rendition of "Waiting
for the Robert E. Lee".

>From 2 to 3 PM we heard performances from the San Francisco Banjo Band, the
Peninsula Banjo Band, and Hall of Famer, Charlie Tagawa, followed by an
outstanding performance on the 5-string banjo by Tim Weed.

Tim is a self-styled banjoist who has taken the 5-string banjo beyond the
standard bluegrass style of playing to new heights and actually brings his thumb
around the back of the neck and frets the 5thstring if needed,
something the most 5-string players have never done.

In the meantime in Claey's Lodge there were banjo workshops, banjo jamming
and youth activities taking place as well as additional performances by some of
the headliners.

The East Bay Banjo Band closed the show and invited everyone to come on stage
for a grand finally. Since the event took place at St. Mary's college we found
it appropriate to play "The Bell's of St. Mary" so with directions from Jack
Convery we all played it switching back and forth from the key of C to the key
of F.

At the end of the show an announcement was made regarding a jam session in
downtown Walnut Creek. So for those of us who wanted to stay around for a while
getting together and playing at the "After Concert Banjo Jam" was an additional
attraction. It was held at the San Franciscan Restaurant on Main Street in
Walnut Creek which was just a 14 minute drive from St. Mary's College. We packed
the restaurant with banjo players and their friends and had a great time playing
music until dusk.

Everyone involved enjoyed the First Summer Jazz Banjo Festival and we can most likely
look
forward to this becoming a recurring annual summer event.

Alden-"He may be the best of his generation," writes Owen Cordle in JazzTimes.
George Kanzler of the Newark Star Ledgerproclaims that he is "the most impressive
and creative member of a new
generation of jazz guitarists." And Chip Deffaa of the New York Postobserves
that he is "...one of the very finest young guitarists working
today."
It seems that the only thing regarding Howard Alden on which
the critics have debate is whether the remarkable jazz guitarist is one
of the best or simply the best.
Howard will be joined by Jack Convery & Friends
One thing I know is that Howard is one of the best tenor banjoists alive today.
