The one item I have not read in the discussion of Brubeck is, his attendance at Mills College.
In the 1940s, around 1947.1947, Dave played in a club close to Lake Merrit in Oakland. He was in classes at Mills at the time, , I used to go see and listen several times. during his stay, can't recall name of club ,need a map of Oakland to remember the clubs name, he played a lot of soft Jazz, as opposed to the be-boppers of that time

Dear Listmembers-
Since the discussion about Brubeck has come up, I would like to give the
experience of some of us on the US Central Gulf Coast. The Mobile ( AL)
Jazz Organization-(MOJO) contacted us here at the Jazz Society of Pensacola
( we're 60 miles apart) about sharing a Brubeck exhibit with them.
The College of the Pacific, Brubeck's alma mater, started this exhibit. It
is self-contained. Has five large panels and illustrates Brubeck's career
as musician, philanthropist, leader for civil rights, etc. It also has some
contained sound effects which go with it-press the button and get the
commentary and the music. Cost was only $800, which includes shipping both
ways. The exhibit can be out for 8 weeks. Mobile asked us to share the
exhibit and expense so each got it for a month and split the cost.
Both organizations had a reception when exhibit opened. Jazz Society of
Pensacola had a regular program where Bobby Van Deusen, pianist and scholar,
gave a "blow and tell" exhibition with piano, alto sax, and drums ( Bobby
played the bass part on the keyboard)
We recommend it to interested parties and organizations. Contact College of
Pacific for details.
Thanks.
