Dear Marek,
The short answer is that although the Jazz Crusade CD (JCCD-3128) is
from the same 1949-50 period as 'Dixie by Dorsey' and 'Dorseyland
Dance Parade' the sessions are not related, notwithstanding the
duplication of some tunes. If, as I do, you like this JD small band,
you should certainly consider adding Big Bill Bissonnette's JCCD-3128
to your collection.
Now for the longer answer:
The titles on 'Dixie by Dorsey' and 'Dorseyland Dance Parade' were
recorded for Columbia at sessions on 1 & 2 November 1949, 17 January
1950 and 7 March 1950 with Charlie Teagarden (t/vcl) Cutty Cutshall
(tb) Jimmy Dorsey (cl) Frank Maynes (ts) Dick Carey (p) Carl Kress (g)
Bill Lolatte (b) Ray Bauduc (d) Claire Hogan (vcl).
[On the March session, "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" and "Let a Smile
Be Your Umbrella," Bud Hackman replaces Cutshall and Al Waslon
replaces Carey.]
All are on the Mosaic CD set MD8-206 'Classic Columbia Condon Mob
Sessions' in addition to your Collectables CD COL 7519.
'MORE! Jimmy Dorsey’s Dorseyland Jazz Band' CD is from a radio
transcription session: 'The U.S. Marine Corps Presents The Jimmy
Dorsey Show with Jimmy Dorsey And His Orchestra and Original
Dorseyland Jazz Band' and recorded for Marine Transcriptions c.
December 1950. The small group for this session had Charlie Teagarden
(t/vcl), Shorty Sherock (t) Frank Rehak or Bud Hackman (tb), Jimmy
Dorsey (cl/as), Art Lyons (ts) Bob Carter (p) Bill Lolatte (sbs), Karl
Kiffe (d).
Songs: Indiana, Introduction, Carry Me Back To Old Virginia, Rosetta,
Chicago, Basin Street Blues, It Had To Be You, Way Down Yonder In New
Orleans, All My Life/Interview, Sidewalks Of New York, Beale Street
Blues, On Wisconsin, Royal Garden Blues, Carolina Moon, That’s A
Plenty, Levee Blues, Down By The Ohio, Charley My Boy, (It’s Only A)
Paper Moon, Stars Fell On Alabama, When You Wore A Tulip, Farewell
Blues, Close & Marine Hymn
I have even more information if you need it.
Although I do not have the Jazz Crusade JCCD-3128 I do have its
companion JCCD-3035 comprising airshots from the Hotel Statler NYC in
1950 which (as you would expect) also contains some of the titles on
the above CDs.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
