Census Bureau Feature for Friday, January 30: Historic Jazz Recordings
Last update: 12:14 a.m. EST Jan. 30, 2009
WASHINGTON, Jan 30, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Profile America -- Friday,
January 30th. The first jazz recordings in history were made on this
date in 1917. The original Dixieland Jazz Band was causing a sensation
at a New York night club and Columbia invited the band to record two
numbers but decided not to release them. A few weeks later, Victor
also recorded the band and released the records known as the first
sounds of jazz ever recorded. While the original Dixieland Jazz Band
did not invent jazz and wasn't the best playing at the time, its
records helped to make jazz a worldwide phenomenon. Now, Americans
spend about $11.5 billion on sound recordings each year, with jazz
accounting for 2 percent of the total. You can find these and more
facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at
www.census.gov.
