Hi Folks,
Hot Dixieland Jazz – Chicago Style @ St John’s Arts Centre Old Harlow
Thursday 29th January @8PM
Yes the first session of 2009 offers an all star ensemble of highly
talented musicians.
This is a line-up which proves that good jazz is not age related. Young
cornettist, Allen Beechey, devotee of Wild Bill Davison pays another
visit to the venue.
Too young to catch the Wild One on the tour with my Legends of American
Dixieland 20 years ago, Allen has managed to assimilate Bill’s instantly
recognisable style.
Another young player, Mark Crooks, always delights wherever he plays. He
has recently been portraying Artie Shaw in a concert.
Martin Litton worked on a recording session in 1986 with Wild Bill and
Jack Free, very much an elder statesman of British Jazz was on the CD
‘Together Again’ with Bill and Art Hodes, as well as the session we did
with Yank Lawson in 1986.
Keith Donald was of course on hand for all these sessions and will be
joining me in the rhythm section.
Admission is £10 and the gig starts at 8PM
New Videos on YouTube
I have posted two new videos on YouTube. One features the young
clarinettist, Adrian Cox, together with Martin Litton, Annie Hawkins and
I at Harlow in November.

The other is a historical document, in that it is twenty years since I
organised what was to be the final tour for Wild Bill Davison and Art
Hodes.
The package, called the ‘Legends of American Dixieland’, (which also
featured the late Campbell Burnap, with Dave Bailey and Keith Donald),
toured all over the country in May 1989.
Louis Lince filmed the concerts in Norwich and Harlow on a professional
Sony video camera. Sadly the tape from the Harlow Playhouse concert was
unplayable, but I have managed to get the Norwich session transferred to
DVD.
Terry Maton, who co-promoted the tour with me & drove the band wagon,
also recorded nearly all the concerts on CD quality digital tape. I have
been able to dub and synchronise the good sound on to the video.
