That's a scary thought.

Amen. The fingerings have no sensible pattern to them, the way
flute, clarinet and sax fingerings do.

I've found that with the Ophicleide, more so than with other
instruments, if you don't play it regularly you get rustier,
faster. The last time Tony Clements did the San Jose Christmas
TubaFest, I played Ophicleide for most of it, but that was 3-4
years ago. About the same time I arranged Karl L. King's "A Night
In June" for Ophicleide and Brass Band, and we performed that a
few times, but until last week my Ophicleide hadn't seen the light
of day for more than a year.

I was tempted to take it to the AFCDJS jazz camp, but since I was
playing trombone rather than tuba this year, I figured I didn't
need the distraction....

"Wabash" is a great song with a long history, but the problem I have
with it is in the first ending of the main chorus - when the song is
played in Eb (as we do in "and That's Jazz") the very important
passing chord is B Natural. This note is the most 'out-of-tune" note
for BBb tubas, unless one has a 5 valve horn (and there are not very
many 5 valve BBb tubas used in jazz bands!)

One has to be very careful to play it just right...

Hi Dave,

Just play it in the middle register with 1+2!

I have 4 valves and I use 2+4, while I always have the 4th valve slide
slightly pulled out, to use it instead of 1+3 (C) and 1+2+3 (B).

Regards,

Dick

Dick, (and any other tubist)

I have tried that before - I want to be playing the lower range
note ;-) My usual horn is a Yamaha 621 CC that is extended to BBb so I
don't have much slide length to fiddle with.

Well, close enough for jazz... back to the Inauguration!
