Whoever wrote the press release at the U.S. Mint did not do his or her homework. Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver have each appeared on U.S. Commemorative Half Dollars: Washington in 1946 and both he and Carver on a second coin.
I've owned one of each coin for decades.

It looks like the mistake was by the CNN reporter. There is no mention of Duke Ellington being the "First African-American on an American coin" anywhere in the press release posted at www.usmint.gov unless someone has already edited out the mistake.
