[Dixielandjazz] Sharps and Flats

Hey, all you jazz players. Quit moaning about how tough it is to play
in the multi sharp or multi flat keys. Hard to finger? Tough noogies.
Practice, practice, practice. Get a steady gig with a classical
orchestra where the music goes into those keys as a matter of routine.
<grin>

Hey Randy F, How about starting a list of classical works in 6 or 7
sharps or 6 flats, etc. Or explaining what these classical guys are
saying below. <grin>

Cheers,
Steve Barbone

Below quoted from the Trombone List - July 15, 2008 on a key signature
thread.

"What? A signature of 8 flats (ie with B flatted twice to a Bbb?)
Really?"

"I've played Bb transposing treble clef in 7 flats before, which I
suppose is technically equivalent to 9 flats in concert pitch. And
I've mentally transposed concert pitch 7 sharps into Eb tuba
transposing treble clef, which is effectively playing in 10 sharps (ie
F, C, and G are double sharps) but I've never seen an example of a
signature beyond 7 sharps or flats written down."

THE ABOVE ANSWERED BY THE FOLLOWING POST:

"The Randall-Mantia Arban's in bass clef has exercises in 8 flats
since they simply transposed the trumpet books which go from 6 sharps
to 6 flats (4 sharps to 8 flats transposed into C Bass Clef) The
Randall Mantia version has problems because of this since orchestral
music often travels into 6 and 7 sharps and the poor trombonist
trained using this method never sees 5 or 6 sharps."

"That has supposedly been fixed in the newer Alessi-Bowman version. I
don't have one so I can't comment."
