Ginny, IN my experience, being in the rhythm section, we pay a lot of attention to what chords are being played by all rhythm instruments (excluding drums of course), and even the front line. I have not been involved in any bitter arguments over the chords. They just has to be decided upon so all are in agreement.
It is not necessarily that one chord is wrong and another is right, although that has to be taken into consideration, it is that for instance, one instrument playing an augmented chord while another is playing a diminished, just can't happen on a recording.
In a live performance, once in a while something like that happens. It goes by fast and even if noticed, is often quickly forgotten. But on a recording that might be heard over and over thousands of times, a clash of chords such as that would stand out like a sore thumb.
In a recent recording session which I was on along with List Mate Scott Anthony, we had several discussions about chords. But they were all very cordial.
