Gene's work on the Town Hall concerts is a testimony as to how 
traditional jazz drums should be played. He drives the band on all the 
sessions he was on and you can tell the difference when Joe Grauso - 
also a fine drummer - takes his place.
Gene uses the full kit - lots of press rolls ala Baby Dodds and Zutty, 
choke cymbal as well as ride and hi-hat. And the solos tell a story.
Gene never lost the capacity to excite a band into life. I have only 
heard one session - a reunion with McPartland and Condon from '69 where 
he is apparently so sick that he loses time. Even the final sessions 
with Goodman, which Bruce Klauber of the jazz legends site has made 
available show that he was still on top of his game whilst in the final 
stages of terminal illness.
All lovers of traditional jazz would do well to re-establish their 
knowledge of Gene Krupa, gone 35 years this month and irreplacable.
