RI woman loses appeal for Nazi-era painting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A federal appeals court has decided that a painting forcibly auctioned by Nazi officials should remain with the estate of the late Jewish art dealer who lost it.
The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston rejected an appeal Wednesday from German baroness Maria-Luise Bissonnette, who lives in Providence.
Last year, a lower court ordered Bissonnette to give the painting "Girl from the Sabine Mountains" to the estate of Max Stern. Stern was forced to liquidate his family's Dusseldorf art gallery in 1937 under repressive laws that targeted Jews.
Bissonnette sought to overturn that ruling, saying, among other issues, that the Stern estate waited too long to bring its case.
The appeals court rejected those arguments.
