Hello folks,
A little ove a week ago I bought five very good Lps (second hand). If
I am mentioning the High Society, it's because I've never heard a
tribute to the ODJB that was quite like it.
Usually, most bands would play the best known standards - Tiger Rag,
Barnyard (Livery Stable) Blues, Original Dixieland One Step, etc.
Not Pierre Atlan. Sure, there are Tiger Rag, Barnyard Blues (with the
animal noises), Clarinet Marmalade and Bluin' the Blues. But there
are also numbers the ODJB played later in its career, such as Bow Bow
Blues, which I've never heard other than by another band. And how
about The Jazz Me Blues, Some of These Days and I'm forever Blowing
Bubbles? The ODJB played them, but they are hardly identified
therewith. What a great idea!
The beginning of Tiger Rag sounds like a throwback to the past, but
soon develops (the five tracks on side one play for over 21 minutes -
anothe"unusual" in an ODJB tribute). Sure, I could do with less
barking, or without any, on Bow Bow Blues, but the excellent more than
playing compensates for it.
A truly good record, with only one cornet, unlike the later Stomp Off
recordings.
By the way, does anybody on the list know the date of the recording?
It's being labelled "stereo compatible" hints at late fifties or early
sixties, but the presence of Daniel Barda indicates at least 1968.
Cheers
