The author of "Precious Lord" was known as, and
recorded as, GEORGIA TOM, and worked in a duo with
Tampa Red, a bluesman whose status in his heyday was
much like that of Muddy Waters in more recent times.
Georgia Tom did indeed work with Ma Rainey, and
recorded quite a lot, including some decidedly naughty
things (and I mean rather naughty than filthy).
The man was a working musician perhaps comparable in
his career with Fletcher Henderson, beginning as an
able pianist more than competent enough to work as a
musical director, and then achieving considerable
eminence as a somewhat different sort of musician
(leaving aside the very important religious aspect).
His complete early recordings in secular mode were
issued by Document Records, and there may yet be some
tunes among these little songs which could be
appropriated to the sort of repertoire which helps
keep this site's music alive.
God does have some of the best tunes, but fortunately
He does let some people share them!
