Hi Folks
Paul Barnes pushed the boat out for traditional jazz on his ‘Gold For
Grown-ups’ show on Saturday. Did you miss it? If so, then fear not,
because you can hear it on line until Saturday 17th May from the BBC as
a download at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/norfolk/aod.shtml?norfolk/paul_barnes_norfolk

Barnsey featured performances by Barry Palser’s ever popular Savoy
Jazzmen, from a BBC Jazz Club broadcast, the Firehouse Five, and a mini
fest of Sidney Bechet to mark his birthday.

Paul chose some classic tracks including the incredible ‘Sweetie Dear’,
from the famous 1932 Bechet / Ladnier New Orleans Feetwarmers session.

He even spun a track, ‘Walkin’ With The King’, from my own Spirituals
CD, ahead of our concert at St John’s Church Epping on 17th May.

The music inspired a number of listeners to e-mail the show while it was
on air, including some delighted fans in the USA. Talk about audience
penetration!

There was also a celebration of the remarkable Fred Astaire, who was
featured with an outstanding Jazz at the Phil line-up, which included
Charlie Shavers, Oscar Peterson and Barney Kessel. Louis and Ella were
in evidence, as well as a super selection of songs by the often
overlooked Maxine Sullivan.

Add some Artie Shaw, Jack Jenny and a celebration of Irving Berlin and I
guarantee you will find that three hours just whiz by.

Do tune in and if you like what you hear write to Paul at
Paul.barnes at bbc.co.uk
and let him know.

The BBC deserves credit for producing a show of such exceptional quality.

Keep swinging
